Being overweight can cause cancer

Link between weight problems and cancer

When people are overweight, it has a negative impact on health. A long-term study has now shown that obesity and obesity can also be associated with a higher risk of several common cancers.

A recent 40-year study by Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found that people who were overweight and obese were at higher risk for various common types of cancer. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "Journal of Internal Medicine".

Obesity is bad for our health

It has long been known that if we suffer from overweight or obesity, it is not good for our health. The effects of these weight problems have been linked several times in the past to an increased risk of various diseases.

The investigation ran over a period of 40 years

In the 40-year, nationwide Danish study, the researchers found that obesity and obesity are associated with a higher risk of multiple common cancers.

Much more cancers than expected

In this study, 20,706 cancers were diagnosed in 313,321 overweight and obese adults. Based on information from the general population, however, only 18,480 cancers were actually expected, the researchers report.

Overweight and obesity risk increased by twelve percent

The data show that there is a higher risk of various cancers associated with obesity and obesity. The researchers calculated that the increase in risk was around twelve percent.

Other strong risk factors for cancer

But not only obesity or obesity are associated with the risk of different types of cancer. Type 2 diabetes or alcohol-related diseases have been linked to an even higher risk, according to the research group.

What types of cancer were at increased risk?

The increased risk was found primarily in cancers for which obesity had previously been identified as a risk factor, including pancreatic and postmenopausal breast cancer, as well as blood and neurological cancers, the research team reports. (as)
