New law: health apps should be available on prescription

Many patients are already using health apps that help them, for example, to take their medicines regularly or to document their blood sugar levels. According to the will of the federal government, doctors should be able to prescribe such apps in the future. Statutory health insurance is to cover the costs.

Millions of people use health apps

Blood pressure measurement via smartphone, digital diaries for diabetics, apps for people with high blood pressure or for the identification of cardiac arrhythmias: Studies have shown that around every second smartphone owner uses health apps. In the future, such apps can be prescribed by the doctor. "The cost of this is paid by the statutory health insurance," says a message from the Federal Ministry of Health.

New law launched

On Wednesday, the Federal Cabinet launched Health Minister Jens Spahn's (CDU) draft for the "Law for better care through digitization and innovation" (Digital Care Law - DVG).

This will enable doctors to prescribe digital applications in the future.

“In the future, patients should be able to have healthy apps prescribed by their doctor. These include, for example, digital diaries for diabetics, support for migraines or mental illnesses or support for women in pregnancy, ”said Spahn.

Access is made easier for manufacturers so that patients can use the apps quickly:

"After the app has been checked for data security, data protection and functionality by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), it is provisionally reimbursed by the statutory health insurance for a year," says the message.

And: "During this time, the manufacturer must prove to the BfArM that its app improves patient care."

More electronic options

The new law also makes it easier for patients to find doctors who offer online consultation hours.

"That is why doctors will be able to provide information on such offers on their website in the future. The clarification for a video consultation can now also take place online, ie within the framework of the video consultation - no longer as before in advance, ”says the message.

In addition, paper in the healthcare system is to be phased out: "In addition to the electronic certificate of incapacity for work and the e-prescription, there is now also the electronic ordinance on medicinal products and aids," explains the ministry.

And those who want to voluntarily join a statutory health insurance fund can do so electronically in the future. (ad)

Love has many faces. Love sometimes smiles, sometimes laughs, sometimes cries, and sometimes she, like an angry wild cat, grimaces, hisses and after a moment rushes in your face to scratch out your eyes. Fear this kind of love.
