Drinking an additional 1.5 liters of water halves the risk of cystitis

A new study has shown that drinking an additional 1.5 liters of water per day can reduce recurrent bladder infections by almost half in premenopausal women. The increased fluid intake could help to limit the use of antibiotics.

Mostly affected women

In the cold season, cases of cystitis become more common. Girls and women in particular are affected by inflammation of the urinary tract, which is usually associated with urinary problems and fever. A new study has now shown that drinking more water can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.

Triggered by bacteria

Inflammation of the bladder (cystitis) is triggered in most cases by Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli bacteria), which bite into the urethra and migrate up to the bladder.

Prevention of bladder infections

Avoid “wiping” after the bowel movement towards the vagina and suppressing the urge to urinate.

And last but not least, to prevent bladder infections, it is generally advised to drink a lot. A new study has now shown how effective this is.

Help in the fight against antibiotic resistance

As researchers from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern in Dallas found in a study, drinking an additional 1.5 liters of water a day can reduce recurrent bladder infections in premenopausal women by almost half (48 percent).

140 healthy women took part in the one-year study; their average age was 35.7 years. The subjects had a history of repeated urinary tract infections.

Senior author Dr. Yair Lotan of the Simmons Cancer Center at UT Southwestern highlighted the importance of the new findings:

"These results are important because more than half of all women report cystitis, which is one of the most common infections in women," said the scientist in a message.

The study results were recently published in the journal "JAMA Internal Medicine".

According to the researchers, more than a quarter of women experience a secondary infection within six months of an initial infection and 44 to 77 percent recur within one year.

Doctors suspect that more fluid can help reduce bacteria and limit their ability to attach to the urethra.

Because these infections are usually treated with antibiotics, the increased fluid could help reduce antibiotic use and help regulate antibiotic resistance, the researchers said. (ad)
